The character of a home.

My love of interiors began in college. I remember going to Barnes & Noble to study and I would find myself flipping through home magazines and buying books of interiors instead of studying.

As a brand-spankin new graduate at 21, I landed a job in my hometown, West Palm Beach, with Coastal Millworks. I was hired in sales and marketing and did not last long in this job. You see my at-the-time-boyfriend-now-husband-lived in Tallahassee and I knew I wanted to be with him more than I wanted to start a career that would leave us long distance. Sometimes I wonder what projects I'd be working on if I stayed with the company, because they do meticulous millwork on custom mega-homes. It is the character I love in homes. The crown moulding, trim around the windows, casing around the doors, built in nooks and book shelves, dentil moulding, wainscoting, beadboard, interior panel doors, arches, mantels and coffered ceilings. Layer upon layer, these details make homes so enticing.

You know who else loves millwork? James Michael Howard.
Bunny Williams achieved millwork perfection in this Palm Beach home.

Cote de Texas posted this detailed paneling.

Little Green Notebook posted these unmatched stair rails I have not been able to forget.

I think the tile, rugs, paint color, light fixtures and furniture are all secondary to the millwork. The millwork is the character.

What's your favorite part of your home or dream home?

I like the character in our house. the wood floors throughout, the built-ins, old windows, and fireplace.
